Direct Instruction

Of all the concerns surrounding public education, one that get very little attention is how content is taught.  Debates rage around what things are taught in the public school system, but the manner in which otherwise simple and uncontroversial subjects, such as math, are taught has entirely evaded the court of public opinion.

A shift is currently taking place in education away from what is called direct instruction to what can be described as collaborative learning.  While something like "direct instruction" may sound boring and "collaborative learning" sounds friendly and inclusive, in a world where things are not always what they appear to be, this change is becoming one of critical importance.
